Mrs. Mary Helen Brown Hunter was born in Brunswick, GA, on March 8, 1931. She passed on March 20, 2020, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years. She was the daughter of the late Mrs. Susie Abefelt Byrd and the late Mr. Sam Brown. Mary graduated from Alfred Beach High School and the Savannah State College, School of Practical Nursing, in Savannah, GA. Mary, who worked as a licensed practical nurse in Georgia, provided nursing care for patients with chronic and acute medical conditions. She retired as a staff nurse from the Fort Steward Hunter Army Hospital after more than 30 years of service.

Before her illness, she was an active member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. Mary’s Guild, assisted in the planning and preparation of the after-church social hour, and was renowned for her delicious brownies. She also sang in the chorus.

Mary loved traveling, and she had the opportunity before her illness to travel with family members to the Midwest and all three coasts of the United States, as well as to Canada, Japan, and Hong Kong. Mary was featured as an extra in the debutante ball scene, “Her Coming-Out Party Number 29,” in Clint Eastwood’s movie drama, “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil.”

Mary was married to the late Harry Hunter, Sr., for more than 60 years, and she leaves five children to cherish her memories: daughters Jacqueline Hunter, Atlanta, GA; Cecelia Hunter, Alexandria, VA; Deborah Hunter Jones, San Diego, CA; and Cynthia Hunter, Los Angeles, CA; and one son, Dr. Harry Hunter, Jr., Detroit, MI. Her second son, the late Byron Hunter (Karen), Savannah, GA predeceased her. Also, her Son-in-Law, the late Tony Jones, San Diego, CA.  Mary also is survived by five grandchildren: Tiffany Jones, Los Angeles, CA; Brandon Jones, San Francisco, CA; Preston Jones, San Diego, CA; Christopher Hunter, Atlanta, GA; and Gabrielle Hunter, Atlanta, GA; one brother, Edward Matthews (Fannie), Pensacola, FL; six nephews and two nieces; goddaughter, Emily Bryant (Wilbert), Gainesville, VA; cousin, Dr. Vincent Perry (Vera); and other relatives and friends.
