Mrs. Lydia Margaret "Mimi" Mendrala

Lydia Margaret “Mimi” Guy Mendrala

January 27, 1957 - November 18, 2020

Lydia Margaret “Mimi” Guy Mendrala passed away November 18, 2020. She was 63.

Mimi was born in Rhode Island, grew up in Illinois, met the love of her life in Florida, but planted her roots in Savannah, Georgia, where she lived most of her adult life.

Mimi was a force of nature, the embodiment of love, as strong a person as one could ever know. It was often said, “If you want to get something done, ask Mimi.” She pursued her goals, whether professional or personal, with a relentlessness that is a rare gift. In times of hardship when others might give up, she found the hidden blessing; there was a reason. She saw the goodness first while others searched in vain. She was generous and kind.  She hosted wonderful parties, decorated her home beautifully for every holiday, and displayed flowers everywhere - all to bring joy to those around her. She found few faults in others, a quality that graced us all. Mimi never met a stranger and made friends of those others might dismiss as mere acquaintances. She carried with her a cherished sense of humor, an eagerness to learn, the occasional silliness, and a childlike, magical view of the world that most of us only glimpse. Yet with all of her gifts, she remained humble.

Mimi spent most of her professional life as a highly sought-after realtor, sparing no effort looking for the very best homes for her clients, making lifelong friendships in the process.

In life, Mimi loved to share her favorite music, and as she died, she wished to recommend “Forever Young,” by Joan Baez, and the album “Reunion,” by Peter, Paul, and Mary, especially the songs “Give Yourself to Love,” and “Spacesuit,” her favorite, which states: “No sweeter music ever came from any other organ than the one we have in common, the one we have in common called the heart.”

Of dying Mimi said, “You start seeing things differently - insights. It’s a beautiful process. I’ve had a beautiful life.”

Mimi’s last candle may be extinguished, but her radiance always will be around us. There was only one Mimi in this universe: She will be missed forever and remembered with joy. In the words of Joan Baez’s song, “Forever Young, “May you build a ladder to the stars.”

Mimi was preceded in death by her loving husband John S. Mendrala Jr. and her parents Patricia and Robert Guy.

Mimi is survived by her children Christopher Danger Mendrala, of Savannah, GA; and Laura Mendrala Sylvester (Ryan), of Seattle, WA; her brother, Jason Guy (Debbie) of Santa Cruz, CA; and her beloved dog Rue.

There will be no memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, Mimi asked that you take a moment to be present in nature, listen to your favorite song, connect to those around you, perhaps make a donation to your favorite charity, and remember to breathe.
