OBITUARY

Dotti A (Miller) Black transitioned to her heavenly home on April 22 at Candler Hospital with her loving daughter Denise (Pixie) at her side. Shortly after listening to the poem “Phenomenal Woman” by author Maya Angelou being read to her by Pixie, she peacefully took her last breath.

Dotti was born in Claxton, GA on December 4, 1939, the first born of the late Elease (Jones) Miller and John W. Miller Sr. At the age of

3, she and her parents relocated to Providence RI with her younger sibling during the period of the Great Northward Migration. She remained a resident of Rhode Island until moving to Savannah in 1990 with her husband and two daughters.

She attended public schools in Providence graduating from Hope High School in 1958. She later attended college at Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

In 1959, Dotti married her high school sweetheart, Paul Black, Jr and from that union, two daughters were born. They enjoyed 42 years together until his untimely passing in 2000.

While a resident of RI, she enjoyed 19 years of employment at the Providence Public Library and was known for being the 1st African American Children’s Librarian in their history. Following her career, as a librarian, she obtained the position of Executive Director of the former Elmwood Community Center for a lengthy period of time.  Dotti was a community activist who was a strong advocate for civil rights and social justice for everyone.

Upon moving to Savannah, she continued her employment working in the Human Services field which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Her employment included working at The Inner City Night Shelter, Tidelands 28 Day Program, and St. Joseph’s Candler/Health System from which she retired. After a short period of time, she re-entered the workforce working at Recovery Place as an Addictions Counselor and retired again in 2012 due to health reasons. During her retirement, she remained active in her community, including serving as Vice-President of her Homeowners’ Association, volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for abused and neglected children, and serving as a board member on various community service organizations, her most recent participation being with the Chatham-Savannah Authority for the Homeless.

She was a faithful and devoted member of Overcoming by Faith Church Ministries.

Dotti was a loving, loyal and protective wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She had an engaging personality with a smile that “always lit up a room.” She never met a stranger! She will forever be remembered and forever missed. She is reunited once again with her husband, Paul, and daughter, Paula.

Survivors include her devoted daughter Denise M. “Pixie” Black and her, fiancée, George Winston; faithful caregiver and companion, Miriam Forte; sister Carol Briggs (Albuquerque, NM); brothers Kenneth Miller (Providence RI) and John Miller (Canton, MA). She is also survived by granddaughters Ashley Reeves (Malcolm) and Antoinette Freeman, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Not to be forgotten, her __loyal_______ fur babies, Toto and Gracie. Dotti also leaves behind to mourn her loss, her loving and devoted friends.

Dotti was preceded in death by her loving husband Paul Black Jr. and loving daughter Paula R. (Black) White and two brothers Robert C. and Dr. James A. Miller.
