Mr. Willis Benjamin Edwards was born in Savannah, Georgia (Chatham County), to his parents the late Mr. Joe Winnie Edwards and Mrs. Eva Lloyd Edwards. Willis and his siblings spent their childhood in the neighborhood of Tatemville, Savannah, GA. Willis Benjamin accepted Christ into his life at an early age.  He completed his formative education while living in Savannah, Georgia earning a diploma from  A. E. Beach High School in 1957.

After high school he moved to New York City, settling down in the borough of the Bronx in New York City.  In 1961, Willis Benjamin met the love of his life, Vivian L. Holley. They married and had two beautiful daughters, Tracy R. Edwards, and Kimberly E. Edwards. He took a position as a letter carrier with the United States Post Office in 1966. He rose up through the ranks and retired as a data technician in 2000. It was a career he loved and persisted in for over forty years.   He spent most of his life dedicated to his family and spending time with friends while living in Harlem until his retirement. Upon retirement, he returned to Savannah, Ga. where he became affiliated with Haven Home Alumni Association; A. E. Beach High School 1957 Class Reunion Planning Committee, and the Tatemville Golden Age Community Center. He also became a member of St. Peter’s A.M.E. Church (Savannah).

Willis enjoyed being of assistance to anyone who needed his help. He was known to study African and Egyptian Culture as well as Latin American Culture.  He could read, speak, and write Spanish and visited Egypt in the 1990’s. He was also heavily into tracing his family history concerning his grandfather, on his father’s side, who was of the Cherokee Nation and his Gullah-Geechee family history. For the last three years, he had an uphill battle with his health but fought long and hard to be present for his devoted daughter Kimberly and his grandson James. James meant the world to Willis who he called “G-PA” affectionately.

On June 20, 2020, God called him home to join his wife Vivian L. Edwards, who passed on June 3, 2020 and oldest daughter Tracy R.
