Portrait of a Dedicated Soul

Elder Mary Jones Ford was a soft spoken, kindhearted person whose eyes lit up whenever she talked about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Born August 21, 1937, to the late Elijah and Elouise Whitaker Jones, Mary was a mild-mannered child with a sweet disposition. She was educated in the Chatham County Public School System and later married James Leon Ford on January 4, 1954, in Ridgeland, South Carolina. They were life partners for 66 years and were blessed with a precious baby boy, Timothy Leon Ford. The Fords’ admiration and love for Ava Hendrix Scott dates to Ava’s years as a young lady. She became the daughter they always wanted, a strong bond that exists today. For several years Elder Ford diligently worked with the late Elder Barbara Mills Williams at Community Child Care and Food Supplement, Inc., retiring after many years of service. Although she retired from Community Child Care, Elder Ford continued working in God’s vineyard until her last breath. Her faithfulness includes her untiring support at West Broad, where she served many years before transferring to the First Garden City SDA Church to help establish in Savannah a third Adventist Church within the South Atlantic Conference.

While at West Broad, Elder Ford worked with the Community Services Ministry, the Pathfinders, a Christian based youth organization, and the youth baseball team. On June 21, 2003, she became an ordained elder under the leadership of Elder Mark Golson, the pastor of West Broad at that time. As a result of her dedication and loyalty to God’s work, on May 10, 2003, the Church family recognized Elder Ford and several active women elders at its “Women on the Move for Christ” celebration. Elder Ford also was the guest speaker, delivering a heartfelt message titled, “Women in the Potter’s Hands.” At the time of her death, she was an active member of the First Garden City SDA Church, working closely with Pastor Damian Grant as his Head Elder.

To remember her warmth and kindness are her life-long partner, Husband James Leon Ford; their adult son, Timothy Leon Ford; two brothers, Elijah Jones (Elouise Jones) of Jamaica, NY and Marion Jones (Hearlean) of Brooklyn, NY; a daughter, Ava Scott; a grandson, Dwayne Hendrix (Cherry); four great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Fred Ford (Patricia) and Nelson Ford; a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members, the First Garden City SDA Church family, the West Broad SDA Church family, and loving friends.
