Obituary for Josie M. Maynard

With profound sadness and a deep sense of loss, we announce the passing of Mrs. Josie Maynard, who was called to the presence of the Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2023. A cherished soul, Josie was born to Eleanor Jones in Savannah, Georgia on August 3, 1927.

She grew up in the beautiful city of her birth, graduating from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1948. Furthering her education, she enrolled in a nursing program at Georgia State College (presently Savannah State University).

Bringing comfort to many, she found employment as a nurse’s aide in Savannah at Memorial Hospital, and later at various nursing homes in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Josie was united in marriage to William R. Maynard, Sr., in 1952, who preceded her in death, and embarked on a life of sacrifice as a military spouse for twenty-one years in duty stations around the world. Together, they raised a family that became their pride and joy.

Affectionately known as “Mommy” to daughters Yvonne Gray (Renardo) of Detroit, Michigan, who preceded her in death; Sandra Formey (Greg) of Columbia, South Carolina; and son, William Maynard Jr., of Louisville, Kentucky. Each of her children reflects a part of her enduring spirit.

Her role as a grandmother is remembered by her three grandchildren, Jonelle Moore (Keith) of Hephzibah, Georgia; Renata Gray and Dorian Gray (Chantele), both of Detroit, Michigan. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Derek, Donovan, and Daaron Moore of Hephzibah.

Josie's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a former member of the First African Baptist Church in Savannah. She had a passion for feeding the homeless, working with Emmaus House. Later, as a testament to her commitment to the Lord, she became a faithful member of the First Nazareth Baptist Church community in Columbia, South Carolina, where she made meaningful connections and regularly lended aid at times of bereavement.

As we bid farewell to Josie Maynard, we celebrate a long-lived life. Her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.

A graveside service to honor and remember Josie will be held at Greenwich Cemetery of Savannah, Georgia.

We thank God for her remarkable journey through life.

Rest in peace. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts forever.
