OBITUARY

Leon Shields was born on February 19, 1946 in Warren County in Georgia to Bartow and Dossie Shields. He was the seventh of nine children born to them.

He passed away peacefully on February 13, 2022 after losing his battle from lung cancer for over 8 years. He was at home under the care of Compassus Hospice of Savannah and surrounded by his loving wife, children, and a special and caring granddaughter, Markaria, who took care of him on a daily basis. The love was shared from a distance by his daughter Kasie, who worked extremely hard at his side and Koman serving as his orderly.

He attended Cuyler High school in Savannah, GA. He joined  the military in 1966 and served in the US Army.  He enjoyed bowling and joined the league with the “Kings and Queens.” He also enjoyed baseball and NASCAR racing. From an early age, he was affectionately known as “Geech” because of his deep southern accent.

While still in school, he fell in love with Carolyn Elizabeth Brown and married her on February 1, 1969. They were married for over 53 years. One of his greatest joys was in raising his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His joy was complete when he began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Leon worked for Union Bag, now known as International Paper for over 41 years and retired from there in 2009 as an Industrial Truck operator. Many in the family remember the wonderful family cookouts and card playing days and nights with Leon as part of their fun.

Leon leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Carolyn, Markaria Williams, his special granddaughter and his children: Sharon (Horace) Kelly, Karen Shields, Marilyn (Terry) Crawford, Leon (Michelle) Shields, Jr., Pamela (Juan) Jefferson, Kasie Shields, Kristina (Bernard) Pelote, Skylar (Brandon) Wilson, and Travis (Megan) Davis; 25 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bartow and Dossie Shields, and two sisters, Helen Shields Mike and Lomie Shields Roper. He leaves behind his brothers and sisters to cherish his memories, Willie Roy (Louise) Shields, Ray Shields, Hardwick Shields, Inez Mention, Lillie Mae Gaskin, Sandra (Melvin) Norman, a sister-in-law Deloris Brown, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
