Mr. Obey Shorter

Adams announces the passing of Mr. Obey Shorter, 73 who transitioned on Monday, September 25, 2017 at Hospice of Savannah.

     Obey Lee Shorter, 73, of Wilmington Island, was received into the loving arms of his Father on September 25, 2017 at Hospice Savannah. A disabled veteran of the Vietnam War, Obey retired after 20 years of service in the United States Army to earn his Bachelors of Science from the University of Maryland and become an educator, first with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Germany then with the Chatham County school system in Savannah. Father of Valentina and Carmen, Obey married Frieda McDew in 1990 and became stepfather to Stanlee. Obey and Frieda shared nearly 30 years of deep affection and devotion together.

     Obey was an active member of several organizations, including the Wolves Club, Inc. of Savannah, the Connecting Links of The Links, Inc., the Mules of the Mules and Moles, Inc., and the SophistiCats of the Sophisticates, Inc. He was a proud Prince Hall Freemason in Frankfurt, Germany—33° Grand Inspector General, and a member of Aswan Temple No. 115—Ancient Egyptian Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (AEONMS). He was also a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. He served on the County Board of Equalization for the Georgia Department of Revenue and on the board of Hodge Memorial Daycare Center. Obey loved his family, gardening, good food, and great company.
     He was preceded in death by his parents Annie Bell Mitchell and Frank Shorter, Sr., siblings Frank “Bobby” Shorter, Jr., Roy Shorter, and Southern Haynes, and son Marcus Shorter. Surviving are his beloved wife Frieda McDew Shorter, daughters Valentina (Michael), Carmen, and Stanlee, grandchildren Sydney and Gunnar, sisters Glorias Smith and Luberta McDaniel, and numerous other relatives, friends, and neighbors from his years in Germany and the United States.
     The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 4, 6-8 pm at Adams Funeral Services on Stephenson Ave. Memorial services will be held Thursday, October 5 at 11 am at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church on MLK Blvd.
