George Roberto Layne, Jr. was born in the Canal Zone in the Republic of Panama on July 31, 1946 and passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 16 2023.
George received his parochial education in Panama City, Panama.
He was a proud graduate of Paraiso Highschool of the Canal Zone, class of 1965.
As a young man George worked at the Panama Canal 1968-1978. During 1978 he joined the United States Army retiring after 20 years of active service. In July 1998 he became a Correction Officer for the Georgia Department of Correction where he met and married his loving wife, Toni. He retired in 2009.
George began his love of music as a teenager. He sang and taught himself to play the guitar. This love of music became an integral part of his life. When he became a member Resurrection of Our Lord, he immediately joined the Voices of Resurrection Choir and was a loving part of this ministry for several years. On November 22, 2015, he received the Bishop Francis X. Gartland Service Award for distinguished service to the church. Because of his talents, George was requested to play at several other houses of worship including Bethlehem Baptist, Butler Memorial Presbyterian, Holy Spirit Lutheran and St. Matthews Episcopal.
George was predeceased by his mother Virginia Palmer Layne and his father George Layne Sr.
He is survived by his devoted wife Antoinette ‘Toni’ Layne, two brothers, Carlos Layne (Marian) of Augusta, GA, Omar Layne (Mariela) of Orlando, FL, and one sister, Laura ‘Minnie’ Layne of San Antonio, TX, three sons Derrick Layne (Martha) of Jacksonville, FL, Joel Layne of Panama City, Panama and Malik Walker and two daughter Desyree Layne Gonzales of Miami, FL and Miracle Shanae Layne of Louisiana and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Adams announces the Mass of Christian Burial Service for Mr. George Layne, Jr. 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church.
Viewing 4:00 - 6:00 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
Interment: Beaufort National Cemetery .
