Littleton Louis Miller III was born on September 13, 1946, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Alice Griffin Miller and Littleton L. Miller, Jr. As their first-born child, he grew up surrounded by the values of faith, family, hard work, and perseverance—principles that shaped the entirety of his remarkable life.
Educated in the Catholic and public schools of Savannah-Chatham County, Littleton graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1965. Not long after, he was drafted into the United States Army, beginning a journey that would reveal both his brilliance and his resilience. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, and was selected for Officers Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where he was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Combat Engineers.
Though many stories circulate about how he came to be called “Step”—track stories, movie theater stories, and others that simply involved “a Step”—one thing was certain: he preferred it. As he would often say, “I’d prefer it if you call me Step…” And he earned that name long before he became a combat leader in Vietnam.
During the Vietnam War, from March 1966 until February 1969, Step’s brilliance and leadership were undeniable. Fast-tracked into a conflict that was not of his making, he rose rapidly through the ranks, serving honorably and with distinction. His service reflected his deep sense of duty, strength, unshakeable resilience, and unwavering commitment to the soldiers he led. For this, he received an honorable discharge, forever carrying himself with the quiet dignity of one who had seen and given much.
After returning home, Step redirected his engineering mind and mathematical genius into a successful career in telecommunications. He took his first “Step” into the field with Bell Pacific Phone Company in Seattle, Washington—a move that ultimately guided him back to his beloved Savannah, where he continued his work with BellSouth until his retirement. His colleagues knew him not only as a dedicated professional but as a man capable of breaking down the most complex permutation…and returning with seven pages of theory to prove it.
Step was not a man of outward affection, but he carried a tremendous heart. He gave his time generously, offering advice wrapped in stories, logic, and perspective. He never insisted on being right or wrong; instead, he would begin simply with, “This is how I see it…” And once he started talking, you listened—because what followed would be thoughtful, layered, and often profound. His commentary on sports could rival that of the greats, his love of family was steady and unconditional, and he enjoyed life’s simpler comforts: a good meal, a Coca-Cola, and yes—his cigarettes. Like all of us, he had his battles, and he met them with the same quiet conviction he brought to everything else.
Step’s greatest devotion was always to his family. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Margaret Geter Miller; his children, Littleton L. Miller IV (Nicole), Dr. Shamaal Miller (Madeleine), and Zakiyya Maxwell; his sister, Rhonda Miller-Williams; and his sister-in-law, Marva Geter. He also leaves behind three beloved grandchildren—Anaya Brodie, London Miller, and Cameron Brodie—as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and many dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Littleton “Step” Miller’s journey on this earth has come to a peaceful close, yet his spirit carries on in the countless lives he touched. His legacy—of service, intellect, humor, grit, and love—remains a guiding light for all who were blessed to know him. His memory will forever be a blessing.
