Florence Atkins Youmans, one of God’s Angels on Earth, was born in Hampton County, SC, July 14, 1936. Florence’s parents were the late Deacon Freddie Atkins and Bessie Demondee. Florence attended Estill High School. Florence was raised in a religious and loving home and became a member of the Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Estill, SC at a very early age. She served diligently and fervently in the Church as a young person.
Florence moved to Savannah when she was 18. Not long after she joined the St. Philip AME Church on Historic MLK Blvd., Savannah. Florence was very active in her beloved St. Philip church and served on many committees with dedication and love, always. Florence served with many Organizations in her church and in Savannah. Including Celestine Guild, Stewardess, Class Leader, Woman’s Mission Society, Blair Roberts Stewardess, Turner Women’s Mission Society, and Zeta Amica Sorority of Savannah.
Florence was joined in Holy Matrimony to Willie Youmans, Sr. They had one son, Willie Youmans, Jr. For many years Florence worked for Mr. and Mrs. Schley Knight, Sr. Florence helped raise the Knight’s 5 children. After Mr. and Mrs. Knight passed, Florence continued to work for the extended Knight Family. She worked for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Knight and helped raise their 3 girls. Florence also worked for Mr. and Mrs. Chris Klein (Nita Ann Knight) and helped raise their 2 girls. Following her love of children and her giving spirit, Florence went to Night School and became an L.P.N. Florence worked at Candler Hospital on the night shift looking after young mothers and their babies for many years.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents Freddie and Bettie Atkins, her husband Willie Youmans Sr. Brothers: Jessie, Clarence and Freddie Atkins. Sisters, Ella Mae Atkins, Shirley Atkins, Bessie Atkins Maynor, and Neddie Atkins Williams.
Florence’s love, happy spirit, and devotion to God and Family will be missed by so many Family Members and dear Friends. These include her son Willie Youmans Jr. and her sister Mary Orange. As well as many nieces, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Her longtime friend and devoted companion these last 2 years, Arthur Mae Battise. Also, the many members of the Knight and Klein Family who will all feel this sad loss. And the dedicated, kind, and caring Staff of Buckingham South, where Florence had lived these last 5 years.
Her final days in Savannah, Georgia, are remembered with deep reverence as family, friends, and community prepare to honor her memory in a series of solemn ceremonies designed to celebrate her extraordinary life. A viewing will be held on April 13, 2026, at Adams Funeral Services, located at 510 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA 31405, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. This moment of quiet reflection will allow all whose lives she touched to pay their respects and commemorate her enduring spirit.
The funeral service for Florence will take place on the following day, April 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip A.M.E. MLK Church, situated at 613 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Savannah, GA 31401. Within these hallowed walls, the community will gather to celebrate a life richly lived—a life that exemplified compassion, dignity, and an unwavering dedication to faith and family.
Following the service, at 12:30 p.m., Florence will be laid to rest at Bonaventure Cemetery, Greenwich Section, located at 330 Bonaventure Rd, in Thunderbolt, GA 31404. There, among the tranquil beauty of the cemetery grounds, she will find her final resting place, embraced by the serene surroundings that reflect the peaceful nature of her soul.
Florence A. Youmans’s passage from this earthly existence leaves an indelible imprint, a testament to a life characterized by grace, perseverance, and quiet strength. Her memory will forever remain a beacon of inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known her. As family and friends gather to commemorate her life, they do so with profound respect and admiration for a remarkable woman whose timeless legacy will endure across generations.
