Carey Alphonso Powers, Jr.

July 25, 1987 — December 16, 2022

Savannah, GA

Adams announces the passing of Carey Alphonso Powers, Jr., 35, who transitioned on Friday, December 16, 2022.

I was there when you entered the world on July 25, 1987. This is the day that I learned the true meaning
of LOVE.
Carey Alphonso Powers, Jr. made his debut into our hearts with JOY and smiles for everyone.
Carey, AKA Lil’ Carey, was kindhearted, affectionate, and loving from birth. Carey had a knack for
decreasing the stress for others with his smile, but more so with laughter.
Born in Savannah, Georgia (Chatham County) to Sheila Reed-Powers (Timmons) and Carey Powers.
Carey was a big brother, big cousin and best friend. His faithfulness in these roles was unimaginable.
Carey was always available to listen, to give advice, provide a ride and to help you receive an A+ on art
projects. Carey was baptized at St. Paul CME church on February 9,1995 by the late Rev. Dr. Henry R.
Delaney.
Carey’s grade school education began at Hodge Elementary, Savannah, Georgia, and then to Hainerberg
Elementary School in Wiesbaden, Germany. Upon returning to Savannah to continue his education, he
graced the halls of Southwest Middle School and completed his High School education at Windsor Forest
High School. Carey received his undergraduate degree in Fashion Design from Savannah College of Art
and Design in 2009.
Carey’s entrepreneur spirit began in his early years when he accompanied his Mommy to work and was
there for more hours than the hired staff. The Savannah Commons residents insisted that he receive gift
cards until he was old enough to join the staff. After graduating from SCAD Carey relocated to Sandy
Springs, Georgia where his brand, CA-LA-PO by Carey, was born. To pay the bills, he worked at Macy’s,
Target and Whole Foods. In 2021 Carey returned to Savannah joining the SCAD faculty as a Technical
Designer in the Fashion Department. CA-LA-PO by Carey is worn throughout the country and has been
featured in Upscale Magazine and Sheen Magazine. He has designed for Reality TV Stars such as Bambi
and Tommie Lee from Love and HipHop Atlanta; Dr. Simone Whitmore from Married to Medicine; Nicco
Annan (Uncle Clifford) from the show P-Valley and Marcus Scribner (Junior) from the TV show Black-ish.
Carey had an infectious laugh that will be truly missed by all. It was rare to see him without a smile on
his face, or to hear him making that cute little snickering sound that no one can imitate. I believe
laughter was his coping mechanism. What would the world look like if laughter could replace evil?
Cherished memories of Carey will remain forever more in the hearts of his mother, Sheila Reed-
Timmons (Efrem); his father Carey Powers, Sr (Vanessa); stepfather, Ansel (Mike) Maynard; Brothers,
Carlton McNeal (Schanequa)and Ansel Maynard, Jr.; and sister, Ciara Powers. Big Cousin to Julian Lyles,
Jared Lyles and Wesley Reed; Grandparents, Walter and Virginia Reed; Nieces, Kenia Friday and Harper
McNeal; Nephews, Darius, Jarrell and Waylen; Aunts, Stephanie Reed-Lyles and Edna Branch Jackson;
Uncles, Tony Reed (Tammy), Cedric Powers (Verita) and Craig Powers; Bonus Aunts, Cheryl Edwards,
Susan Baker, Sharon Green and Audrey Bruen; Best Friend, Danielle Blige; Bonus Brothers, Ronald
Daniels and Antoine Parks; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends to include the faculty, staff
and students of Savannah College of Art and Design.
If LOVE could have saved you Carey, you would have never left us.
My heart maybe broken, but my soul longs for the day when we are together again.
