Ms. Bernice Veronica Rivers, a beloved aunt, revered educator, and devoted servant of God, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Savannah, Georgia, just a few months shy of her 100th birthday. Her life was a magnificent testament to faith, excellence, and unwavering service to others.

A proud graduate of Savannah State College, Ms. Rivers dedicated over forty years to shaping the minds and hearts of youth in her community. She began her distinguished teaching career at St. Benedict’s Elementary School, serving faithfully until its closing in 1969. She continued her impactful ministry of education at St. Mary’s School and Cathedral Day School (later Notre Dame). As an educator, Ms. Rivers was legendary; she possessed a rare combination of grace and authority, always demanding the absolute best from her students because she believed deeply in their potential.

Equally profound was her devotion to her faith. Baptized on April 12, 1936, Ms. Rivers was a lifelong pillar member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. For nine decades, she poured her heart into her parish, notably serving as a catechist. Through her rigorous and loving instruction, she prepared countless souls for a life following Christ, leaving an indelible mark on the spiritual fabric of Savannah.

To her family, she was a matriarch of strength, wisdom, and enduring love. Ms. Rivers will be deeply missed and forever remembered by the generations of students she inspired, the church community she helped sustain, and the family she loved so fiercely.

Funeral Mass: Thursday, June 4, 2026, St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, 441 East Broad Street, Savannah, Georgia 31401
